Your First Hijab: A Beginner's Guide to Getting Started

Just starting to wear hijab can feel overwhelming. There are so many fabrics, styles, and opinions — and most guides assume you already know what you're doing.

This one doesn't. Here's everything you actually need to know to get started comfortably, confidently, and without overcomplicating it.

Start With the Right Fabric

The single biggest mistake beginners make is starting with the wrong fabric. Chiffon is beautiful but slippery — it shifts constantly and requires pinning skill that takes time to develop. Silk is luxurious but demands experience to style well.

For beginners, start with one of these two:

Bamboo Jersey — The most forgiving hijab fabric you'll find. It's stretchy, grippy, and stays in place without pins. You can wrap it loosely and it holds. Soft, breathable, and nearly impossible to get wrong. Our bamboo jersey hijabs come in over 30 colours — start with a neutral.

Modal — If you want something slightly more elevated from day one, modal hijabs are silky-smooth, naturally breathable, and easier to style than chiffon. They drape beautifully and feel luxurious without requiring pinning expertise.

If you're not sure which to start with, go bamboo jersey. You can always add modal once you're comfortable.

You Need an Undercap

An undercap (also called a hijab cap) is the base layer you wear under your hijab. It serves two purposes: it keeps your hair covered at the edges, and it gives the hijab fabric something to grip so it doesn't slide.

For beginners especially, an undercap makes everything easier. Our cotton jersey undercap has an adjustable tie-back so you can customise the fit, and it's breathable enough to wear all day.

Skip the Pins — Use Magnets Instead

Traditional hijab pins work, but they snag delicate fabrics, leave small holes, and take time to position correctly. For beginners who are still figuring out their style, pins add an extra layer of difficulty.

Hijab magnets are a much simpler alternative — strong hold, no fabric damage, and no pinning technique required. Once you've used them, going back to pins feels unnecessary. Our hijab magnet set works with jersey, modal, chiffon, and satin.

A Simple Wrap to Start With

Don't try to master complex styles on day one. Here's the simplest wrap that works:

  1. Place the hijab over your head with one side longer than the other (roughly 60/40)
  2. Pin or magnet under your chin
  3. Take the longer side, bring it across your chest and over your opposite shoulder
  4. Adjust and you're done

That's it. Once this feels natural — usually within a week — you'll start experimenting naturally.
